How geography shapes cultural diversity

Study offers evidence that long countries give better protection to languages than those that are wide.

Continents that span narrower bands of latitude have less variation in climate, which means a set of plants and animals that are adapted to more similar conditions. That is an advantage, says Diamond, because it means that agricultural innovations are able to diffuse more easily, with culture and ideas following suit. As a result, Diamond's hypothesis predicts, along lines of latitude there will be more cultural homogeneity than along lines of longitude.

Nobel-palkintorahoja leikataan 20 prosentilla

Nobel-komitea on päättänyt supistaa palkintorahoja viidesosalla. Tiedemaailman kärkinimille jaettavat rahapalkinnot ovat leikkauksen jälkeen 8 miljoonaa ruotsin kruunua eli noin 0,89 miljoonaa euroa.

Nobel-komitea perustelee leikkausta Nobel-säätiön taloudella. Komitea haluaa muutoksella varmistaa, että säätiöllä on riittävän vankka pohja rahoittaa palkintoja myös tulevien vuosien aikana.

Leikkauspäätös tehtiin sen jälkeen, kun Nobel-säätiön varojen keskimääräinen tuotto ei enää riittänyt kattamaan kaikkia Nobel-palkintoja ja säätiön hallinnointikuluja.

Researchers studying mortality rates on over two million people over a forty year time span have found that statistically speaking, people are more likely to die on their birthday, than any other day of the year. Bumping the numbers are suicides by men, who apparently find the ultimate milestone a little too hard to bear. But those deaths aren’t enough to account for the overall fourteen percent increased likelihood that any given person will die on the same day of the years as the day they were born compared to any other day of the year.

Neuroscience: The mind reader
Adrian Owen has found a way to use brain scans to communicate with people previously written off as unreachable. Now, he is fighting to take his methods to the clinic.

Adrian Owen still gets animated when he talks about patient 23. The patient was only 24 years old when his life was devastated by a car accident. Alive but unresponsive, he had been languishing in what neurologists refer to as a vegetative state for five years, when Owen, a neuro-scientist then at the University of Cambridge, UK, and his colleagues at the University of Liège in Belgium, put him into a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine and started asking him questions.

Incredibly, he provided answers. A change in blood flow to certain parts of the man's injured brain convinced Owen that patient 23 was conscious and able to communicate. It was the first time that anyone had exchanged information with someone in a vegetative state.

Jep, tää on melko siistiä settiä. Ei pysty uskoa mihin saavutuksiin tuo luotain on yltänyt, ja me. With absolutely no attempt at hyperbole at all, it is fair to say that this is one of - if not the - biggest achievement of the human race.

For, as we speak, an object conceived in the human mind, and built by our tools, and launched from our planet, is sailing out of the further depths of our solar system - and will be the first object made by man to sail out into interstellar space.

The Voyager 1, built by Nasa and launched in 1977 has spent the last 35 years steadily increasing its distance from Earth, and is now now 17,970,000,000km - or 11,100,000,000miles - away, travelling at 10km a second.

Indications over the last week implies that Voyager 1 is now leaving the heliosphere - the last vestige of this solar system.

Onhan se Voyager 1 nyt ollut jo vuosikymmeniä kauempana kuin mikään muu ihmisen tekemä laite...

Jos nyt viisastelemaan rupeet niin mitä jos tsekkaisit muiden iloksi faktat että siitä viisastelusta hyötyis edes joku jotain, "vuosikymmeniä" kun on mielestäni hieman harhaanjohtavasti ilmaistu; tarkemmin sanottuna 14 vuotta ja 4 kuukautta on kulunut siitä, kun Voyager 1 ohitti Pioneer 10 -luotaimen vuonna 1998.

The cameras of Voyager 1 on Feb. 14, 1990, pointed back toward the sun and took a series of pictures of the sun and the planets, making the first ever "portrait" of our solar system as seen from the outside. In the course of taking this mosaic consisting of a total of 60 frames, Voyager 1 made several images of the inner solar system from a distance of approximately 4 billion miles and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic plane. Thirty-nine wide angle frames link together six of the planets of our solar system in this mosaic. Outermost Neptune is 30 times further from the sun than Earth. Our sun is seen as the bright object in the center of the circle of frames. The wide-angle image of the sun was taken with the camera's darkest filter (a methane absorption band) and the shortest possible exposure (1/125 second) to avoid saturating the camera's vidicon tube with scattered sunlight. The sun is not large as seen from Voyager, only about one-fortieth of the diameter as seen from Earth, but is still almost 8 million times brighter than the brightest star in Earth's sky, Sirius. The result of this great brightness is an image with multiple reflections from the optics in the camera. Wide-angle images surrounding the sun also show many artifacts attributable to scattered light in the optics. These were taken through the clear filter with one second exposures. The insets show the planets magnified many times. Narrow-angle images of Earth, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were acquired as the spacecraft built the wide-angle mosaic. Jupiter is larger than a narrow-angle pixel and is clearly resolved, as is Saturn with its rings. Uranus and Neptune appear larger than they really are because of image smear due to spacecraft motion during the long (15 second) exposures. From Voyager's great distance Earth and Venus are mere points of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent only 0.12 pixel in size. Coincidentally, Earth lies right in the center of one of the scattered light rays resulting from taking the image so close to the sun.

No mutta pakostihan jonkin luotaimen on oltava se kauimmas päässyt. Eihän siinä ole mitään ihmeellistä, olettaen että luotaimia ylipäänsä on.

En tosiaan muistanut, että Pioneerin ohittamisesta on noin vähän aikaa, vaikka lienenkin meistä ainoa, joka ihan oikeasti on jopa käyttänyt Voyagerien (pääasiassa tosin kakkosen) keräämää dataa avaruustutkimukseen.

No mutta pakostihan jonkin luotaimen on oltava se kauimmas päässyt. Eihän siinä ole mitään ihmeellistä, olettaen että luotaimia ylipäänsä on.

Missaat edelleen pointin, PCD tarkensi jo, että ihmeellistä on se, miten pitkä matka tuo on, miten se luotain poistuu Solista, ja että se vielä toimii. Saavutuksista ne suurimmat on aina melkoisen ihmeellisiä, ja ennätykset ovat ihmeellisiä, varsinkin tämän aiheen suhteen.

En tosiaan muistanut, että Pioneerin ohittamisesta on noin vähän aikaa, vaikka lienenkin meistä ainoa, joka ihan oikeasti on jopa käyttänyt Voyagerien (pääasiassa tosin kakkosen) keräämää dataa avaruustutkimukseen.

Tutkijat ovat havainneet vähemmän juhlallisen yksityiskohdan syntymäpäivistä.

Annals of Epidemiologyssa julkaistussa tutkimuksessa kahlattin yli kahden miljoonan henkilön tiedot liittyen heidän kuolemaansa. Tutkitut henkilöt olivat kaikki yli 40-vuotiaita.

Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että riski kuolla syntymäpäivänä kasvaa iän myötä. Yli 60-vuotiailla on 14 prosentin "mahdollisuus" menehtyä syntymäpäivänä.

Yleisimmin ihminen kuolee syntymäpäivänään sydänkohtaukseen tai aivohalvaukseen. Itsemurhat näkyvät tilastoissa noin 35 prosentin kasvuna verrattuna normaaliin päiviin. Sydänkohtauksen vastaava prosentti on noin 18. Pääsääntöisesti itsemurhan syntymäpäivänään tekevä henkilö on mies.

Tunnetuista henkilöistä ainakin William Shakespeare ja Ingrid Bergman ovat kuolleet syntymäpäivänään.
