Klassisista japanilaisista kamppailutraditioista kiinnostuneille tiedoksi :

Ljubljanan Yliopiston Aasian tutkimuksen laitos järjestää elokuun loppupuolella tieteellisen seminaarin, jossa on paikalla akateemisen tutkimushuipun lisäksi poikkeuksellisen paljon myös käytännön osaamista aiheesta.

“Bushidō in Transformation: Japanese Warrior Culture and Martiality”

One of the all-time best-selling books explaining Japanese culture remains Ruth Benedict’s The Chrysanthemum and the Sword. While the sword as a symbol of the martial aspect of Japanese culture is already featured in the title, the overall argument of Benedict's analysis is that this martial aspect of Japanese culture was not simply a temporary anomaly and a result of specific socio-economic conditions of the early 20th century, but is rather an intrinsic part of Japanese culture itself.
Another bestseller that is continuously reprinted and often referred to by readers wishing to delve into the secrets of Japanese culture is Nitobe Inazo's Bushido The Soul of Japan, in which Nitobe was trying to portray Japan as similar to the West and fundamentally possessing the same civilizational level.
Bushidō, essentially a militaristic concept and a rather rarely used word before Nitobe’s work, was transformed in his hands into an ethical code, based on loyalty, sincerity, courage, benevolence, honour and so on, i.e. virtues which he believed were representative of the nation as a whole. Other interpreters before and after Nitobe took a less universalistic approach and used the concept of bushidō to promote absolute loyalty to the emperor and state, with the aim of establishing the Japanese as essentially different or superior to other peoples. After the war and despite the transformation of Japan into a “peaceful” culture, bushidō remained a popular idea, as it still does. In its more “militaristic” meaning it has found its way into the business and corporate world, where modern corporate warriors conquer markets and fight the competition, while in its more spiritual aspect it has become a favourite of modern practitioners of the martial way.

In this symposium we wish to address the following topics:
What is the ideology of bushidō?
The transformation of bushidō through the centuries
The role of the ideology of bushidō in contemporary Japanese society
The popularity of martial arts in Japan and worldwide
The way of learning and teaching martial arts through the mind and body
Bushidō practice as a means of spiritual development
Neo-Confucian contributions to bushidō
Religious traditions (Daoism, Zen Buddhism) in bushidō
Bushidō’s influence on parts of society, i.e. arts, business, and religion
Bushidō and social stratification in Japan
The symposium aims to be inclusive and reach out to a broad range of audiences exploring new trends, developments and prospects in the study of bushidō in Japan and worldwide. More specifically, this conference seeks to offer new ways to discuss the methodological challenges and opportunities brought by new ideas of the way of exploring changes in the ideology of bushidō.

We proudly announce the keynote speakers will be Professor Karl Friday and Professor William M. Bodiford, who have experience and expertise in Kashima Shinryū.
After the symposium, Dr. Takamune Kawashima will organize a practical demonstration and presentation of Kashima Shinryū as an example of a traditional Japanese martial art.

We invite proposals for paper presentations on above topics for participation in our symposium. Presentations at the symposium will be 20 minutes each, followed by a 10-minute discussion.

Abstracts for paper presentations on above mention topics should be submitted per email to cjsinslo@gmail.com using the templates below by 30 April 2017.

Selected papers from the symposium will be published, after double peer-reviewing, in the journal Asian studies (in database SCOPUS, http://revije.ff.uni-lj.si/as).

There is no participation fee.

Please forward this announcement to others who may be interested in participating in this event.
Thank you.

Vaikuttaa todella kiinnostavalta setiltä. Jos tulee jotain katsottavaa tai luettavaa matskua niin laittakaa jakoon.
