Sami passed his test for 2nd dan yesterday at Sangmukwan in Seoul, South-Korea.
At the same time Satu tested for 1st dan and she passed as well.
Two 9th dan masters were present to conduct the test. They were very pleased with what they saw.
Hankido in Finland is certainly going strong.
Sami and Satu stayed in Korea for two weeks to train at the International Training Center of master Ko Baek-yong.
Here you can see a picture that is taken after the test.
I would like to personally congratulate both Sami and Satu on a job well done.

A little Easter present
Recently I have put together a DVD about Hankido's basic techniques for some of my foreign students.
I am giving it away for free now so everyone can enjoy it.
You can download it using this link:
NEW LINK: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5861158/hankido_basics.img" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The file is about 3 gigabyte!! Download it, mount the image (use Nero on Windows, Macs should be okay with the file) and burn it.
Here is a cover for the DVD:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5861158/hkd_bas ... -cover.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Help we get more space to upload DVD's, click this link:
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTU4NjExNTg5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The sound on the DVD isn't very good because of the other people in the room playing volleyball
If you want to study hankido with a qualified master in Finland, contact Sami Munukka at http://www.hankido.fi" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In Korean, and also Chinese, martial arts they use the concept of Cheon Ji In (天地人, Heaven, Earth, Man). Ji (earth) being the beginners fase, In (man) the development fase and Cheon (heaven) the transcedent fase.
The symbol used it the triple yin-yang called samtaeguk.
Again, doesn't really matter what you call it but how you use it.
And we talk about it as much as we want, but in the end the only place where you can experience it is on the mat.

When dojunim Kim Yun-sang was teaching a seminar in Wittenberg, Germany, I went there together with Frans van Drenth, his brother and some of their students. So yes I do know him but we have only met once.
Frans stopped teaching hapkiyusul however and switched to aikido instead.
The principles that guide hapkiyusul and hankido have many similarities. Actually many martial arts like aikido, hapkido, hapkiyusul, daitoryu, hankido and hjms share the same core principles. However their emphasis on certain aspects may differ and with that their techniques may look different. When I was at the seminar with dojunim Kim I found that we share a lot of ideas about the use of power in techniques etc.
This does not only happen between different martial arts, it also happens between practitioners of the same martial art. Since we are all different individuals we use the techniques of a martial art in our own way. As a student you first learn a basic way (your teacher's way) to do the technique, but later you will adapt them to your own style. Again, this doesn't mean that everybody should start his own martial arts style, but when you see differences between several high ranking masters of one style, it is because they have different body types. In the end it doesn't really matter (to me) how the technique looks from the outside. It is the inside of the martial art, its core principles that are important. If the core is okay, the outside will be okay as well.
If you don't build a strong core, in the end your techniques will always suck (pardon my language).
